Cleaning the grill and grill grate: These home remedies will help

It is a highlight in the garden: the grill. The grill should also be clean so that meat, skewers and vegetables always taste delicious. With these secret weapons you can clean your grill thoroughly, quickly and easily.

Whether on the terrace or on the balcony: the sunnier it gets, the more often the grill is lit. But before you restart it after a long break, it is worth cleaning it well.


  • When cleaning your grill, always wait until it has cooled down completely.
  • Make sure that the embers have cooled down, the gas connection is closed and the power supply is interrupted.
  • Only then can you start cleaning and disassembling your grill.

For most of the dirt on a conventional grill grate, simple cleaners or household remedies are sufficient. But how much effort must be expended to clean the grill depends on the type of grill. Gas and electric grills are much easier to care for than charcoal grills. They mostly have collecting trays for the fat that are easier to wash off.

If you oil the grill grate well beforehand, you will have to scrub less afterwards.

Easy cleaning of the electric and gas grill

The collecting tray and the grid can be cleaned with warm water and a little washing-up liquid or in the dishwasher. The cast iron grill surfaces popular with gas grills should not be cleaned in this way, however. Here you should rely on warm water.

If the grillage and drip tray are not completely clean in the dishwasher, pre-rinsing is at least helpful. The cleaning agents already loosen the dirt particles that are still on the grille, so that they can be removed more easily during the subsequent hand wash.

If the incrustations are too stubborn, you can loosen them with a washing-up brush. Do not use a steel brush!

Wipe off all other parts that are soiled with a soft, damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid.

Difficult cleaning with the charcoal grill

Cleaning in the dishwasher is not suitable for parts of charcoal grills. You can clean these with warm water and washing-up liquid and a brush. It is best to soak all the ingredients in the detergent water overnight.

Let residues burn out?

When the meat is grilled directly over an open fire, the mixture of fat, spices and ash particles burns to a black crust. This should be removed thoroughly after grilling, otherwise it will leave unwanted marks on the next steak and reduce the taste - it is also unhygienic.

Many barbecue fans remove the incrustations by letting the barbecue burn out. Then loosen the incrustations and grill residues with a grill brush. The loosened dirt is then simply wiped off with a damp cloth.

Newsprint as a soaking aid

A very simple but effective way to get the grill clean later without much effort is to wrap the grate in damp newspaper after it has cooled down. After a few hours of exposure, the incrustations are softened to the point that they can be easily removed with a sponge and washing-up liquid. Usually a meadow or lawn is not far when grilling. Then you can put the grill grate on the wet grass overnight. Dew and moisture soften the incrustations so that they can be easily removed the next day.

Ash as a cleaning aid

If charcoal was used, the ashes can then be used for cleaning. Dip an old, damp cloth into some fine ash from the grill and rub the grill grate with it. The ash pulp grinds away the encrustations and acts like soap. Then rinse the grate off with water. A positive side effect: the ash mixture that is washed off even acts as a fertilizer in the garden.

Old and encrusted grill residues are particularly difficult to remove. If all else fails, oven cleaner might be the rescue. You spray the grate with oven cleaner and put it in a large plastic bag for a few hours to take effect. Then even stubborn residues can be washed off with washing-up liquid and a sponge.

This way the rust collects less dirt

If you rub the grate with oil or fat before grilling, you will save a lot of work later because not so much residue will stick to the grill. So that the charcoal container can also be cleaned better, the bottom is lined with aluminum foil. This also improves the development of heat, as the film reflects the heat. For the necessary air circulation, however, a few holes must be worked into the film.

Home remedies for cleaning the grill

Aluminum foil

If there is aluminum foil left over, for example from the salad cover or the grilled potato, it can rub off the burnt-on meat and fat residues from the grillage. But no method completely eliminates cleaning.

baking powder

The leavening agent baking powder removes burnt-in food both on the grill grate and on the cast iron grill surfaces or the drip tray. Fill your kitchen sink or a large bucket with warm water. Then place the grill rack in it and add two packets of baking powder to the warm water. Now let everything soak overnight. The next day you can easily loosen the burnt residue with a brush, warm water and washing-up liquid.

The trick works even better with baking soda.

Vinegar and sugar

Apple cider vinegar effortlessly removes fat and burnt-in material. Mix 200 milliliters of apple cider vinegar with two tablespoons of sugar. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and use it to spray the grill grate, which is still hot. Now the home remedy is worked into the incrustations with a sponge or brush. After the grill rack has cooled down, you can wash everything off under warm water with a little washing-up liquid and a cloth.

Disposable grills: do they make sense?

Disposable grills are a tempting alternative without cleaning. The inexpensive disposable grills are usually offered as an all-round carefree package with charcoal and grill lighter and are therefore well suited for festivals and very spontaneous barbecue activities on the beach or in the park. However, you will hardly experience culinary delights with the disposable grills. The grill performance drops sharply after a short time and the heat cannot be regulated well.
