The Berlin Competence Center for Big Data has set itself the goal of developing highly innovative technologies that organize huge amounts of data and with the help of which well-founded decisions can be made in order to create economic and social added value. For this purpose, the previously isolated areas of data management and machine learning will be merged. The centre's technologies are intended to reduce the costs of analyzing big data, decisively increasing the number of people who can carry out analyzes of big data and expanding Germany's leading position in science and business. The focus is, for example, on three economically, scientifically and socially relevant application areas: materials research, medicine and information marketplaces.
Building on globally recognized research results, automatic optimization, parallelization and scalable and adaptive processing of algorithms should be made possible. Areas of machine learning, linear algebra, statistics, probability theory, computational linguistics and signal processing are dealt with.
By providing a technologically leading open source system and services for data analysis and technology transfer based on it, the center will promote the training, research, development, innovation and commercial use of big data analytics in Germany and thus secure a competitive advantage for German companies.

Competence Center for Scalable Data Services and Solutions (ScaDS Dresden / Leipzig)
Economic and scientific competitiveness is increasingly determined by the efficient and intelligent handling of very large, often distributed and often heterogeneous databases. The resulting resource requirements are pushing previous approaches to data acquisition, integration, analysis and visualization to their limits. The "Competence Center for Scalable Data Services and Solutions" (ScaDS Dresden / Leipzig) will address this range of tasks in a holistic and application-oriented manner. The research activities include the focus on data quality and integration, knowledge extraction and visual analysis as well as the topics "Efficient Big Data Architectures" and "Big Data Lifecycle Management and Workflows".
The center integrates a wide range of applications from the strategically important fields of life sciences, materials and engineering, environmental and transport sciences, digital humanities and business data. In a service-oriented, modular approach, the applications should be divided into task classes with regard to similarities and differences in their processing characteristics and requirements, which can be addressed in a problem-specific manner. For this purpose, the competence center will develop a comprehensive concept for big data services in an iterative process and make these available as application-related solutions. Embedded in the Saxony region, the competence center is to establish itself as a service provider for industry and science and develop international importance in a worldwide network. To this end, ScaDS bundles the methodological expertise of the universities in Dresden and Leipzig in one organization

SDIX - Smart data innovation processes, tools and operating concepts
By structuring “Big Data”, information is obtained that can be used for knowledge advantages or for decision support. Compared to research disciplines such as chemistry or physics, no traditions have yet emerged in the area of big data research with regard to processes or standard tools. The SDI-X project explores the possibilities and limits of methods for real-time data analysis. Model solutions in the areas of processes, tools and operating concepts are to be created in order to establish and strengthen data analysis as an engineering discipline. For this purpose, prototypes are developed that are evaluated on the basis of targeted research projects in the field of data analysis in the four core areas of Industry 4.0, Energy, Smart Cities and Personalized Medicine.
The project is being carried out as part of the nationwide data analysis laboratory Smart Data Innovation Lab (SDIL), which was established in 2014/15 between partners from science and industry. The Smart Data Innovation Lab (SDIL) is an important cooperation partner of SDI-X. The SDIL is an exchange and operating platform to accelerate cooperation between industry, the public sector and research in the field of big data and smart data technologies. To this end, companies and research institutions have organized themselves in SDIL communities and agreed a framework between the partners involved.
