Experts understand M2M to mean the automated exchange of information between end devices such as machines, vending machines, vehicles or containers with one another or with a central control center. M2M simplifies workflows, streamlines processes and enables completely new business models in all economic areas - from logistics and automotive to energy, health and trade to the public sector.

Diverse fields of application

The number of possible applications is unlimited: there are cars that not only transmit their position in a car sharing pool, but also their mileage and fuel level. Or smoke detectors that inform the fire brigade independently in the event of a fire. For private households, on the other hand, security and convenience are increasing - for example through M2M solutions for medical remote monitoring or through intelligent home management.

From captured data to intelligent actions

M2M combines information and communication technology. There are four key steps in any M2M solution:

  1. The acquisition of data by sensors.
  2. The transmission of data to a central server via cellular or landline connections such as 5G, Narrow Band IoT or LTE-M.
  3. The evaluation of the data.
  4. The triggering of a corresponding intelligent reaction from machines, vehicles or containers.

In this way, for example, it can be prevented that sensitive goods spoil, get lost or reach their destination too late during transport or storage. Freight forwarders, for example, who significantly reduce these risks thanks to M2M, gain clear competitive advantages in the highly competitive market.
