Instagram tip # 1: beautiful Instagram pictures are the be-all and end-all

You have probably heard this tip many times, because it is one of the basic building blocks for a successful Instagram account. But what are beautiful Instagram photos anyway? These are photos that are, on the one hand, of very high quality (i.e. well lit, not blurry) and that inspire users on the other. For me, this means making the users on my channel want to start their own business and giving them valuable tips for this path.

Dock on current trends with high-quality images

WHAT exactly you post doesn't really matter. It has to fit you, your blog (or company) and your target audience. Do you blog, for example. about travel, it makes sense to post great photos of your travels. At the beginning I blogged about DIY projects and addressed a young target group: So I mainly posted DIYs.

The trick is to find the right balance between “mainstream Instagram” (ie certain photos that are very popular with users and generate high traffic) and your own visual language.

Create a mood board with inspiring contributions (either online or as a classic poster on the wall. This will help you to develop your own style!

Very important: In order to become successful quickly, a certain aesthetic is necessary on Instagram. In the beginning, it helped me to research popular photos in relevant hashtags. I collected these photos in a mood board (e.g. with a secret board on Pinterest) and then thought about WHAT exactly makes these photos so popular. Inspired by these photos, I then started to post similar content in my own visual language.

I have a few here Examples from my previous DIY Instagram account @carodiy to you. You don't have to copy this style to be successful. The only important thing is that you find your own style!

I made sure to include that in every post my own imagery reflects: Lots of pink and pastel, sweet details and donuts. With these branding elements I created my unique visual language and managed to stay in the user's mind for a long time.

A second example my current Business accounts @ I would like to show you too. On this account I mix personal photos with infographics. I integrate my branding colors pink, yellow and black in every photo. In addition, I focus on personality, added value (knowledge, know-how, tutorials) and insights behind the scenes of my company on this account:

Gain Instagram followers with a uniform branding

Instagram tip # 2: a harmonious Instagram feed

Once you get the hang of creating beautiful photos for Instagram, you should start thinking about a uniform imagery do. When I started Instagram at the time, it was clear that pink and pastel tones should be my basic colors. My entire profile should radiate a bright, friendly atmosphere.

But it can also be completely different for you: Think carefully about what suits your blog or company. For example, is your color green? Excellent! Then keep using green blobs of color in your photos!

The development of my visual language

In 2020 I revised and adjusted my branding again. In my feed you will always find the same colors and also certain post formats that repeat themselves over and over again with some distance. Of course the content and the added value are new, but the "basic structure" is the same.

My imagery 2021

Always keep in mind that you can only convince new users to follow you if your overall profile is consistent. So it is not enough to just upload beautiful pictures, they MUST also fit together well as a collage and harmonize. Simple example: Important: Post e.g. not twice the same scenery side by side.

Instagram tip # 3: create engagement

I have already confessed to you that I underestimated exactly this point at the beginning. I thought: “With a few nice photos, the work is done, it clicks and followers grow on autopilot, so to speak.” Wrong thought. At first I really underestimated the importance of answering comments and writing comments under other pictures.

And again, I want to be completely honest when I speak of a growth to 100,000 subscribers within a few months and you wonder how I did it: I commented and liked a lot on Instagram, especially at the beginning. Really, really a lot. That helped me to make other users aware of me. At some point I reached a point where I was already well known in my small niche and no longer had to interact wildly (comments are still all answered 😉). In the beginning, however, it really took many hours of interaction before I was able to build a solid community.

So: Engagement on Instagram is at least as important as beautiful pictures.

You can also find out more about the topic in my free Instagram training. There I'll tell you my best tricks to increase your Instagram interaction rates.

Instagram tip # 4: use the right hashtags

I know a lot of Instagram users who either consider hashtags to be irrelevant or use hashtags incorrectly. To be honest, I'm always surprised how few Instagram users have correctly recognized the potential of hashtags (including my Instagram beginnings!).

You use hashtags so that, ideally, your pictures are featured by the Instagram algorithm via the hashtag search for 24 hours. This means that many more users see your photo and become aware of you.

Note: not all hashtags are the same! There are large hashtags (e.g. #yummy, #food, #fashion, #ootd) and smaller hashtags (e.g. #milkshakes, #fashionblogger_de, #diyblogger). I researched hashtags carefully for each of my picture types (flatlay, food, DIYs).

How to find the right hashtags

Suppose I am a fashion blogger and now I give, for example. #fashionblogger_de a. Then related hashtags like #modeblogger and #modeblogger_de are shown to me in the bar at the top. These hashtags are a bit smaller than #fashionblogger_de and I have a higher chance of being featured in the hashtag at the top. Nevertheless, the hashtags fit my niche perfectly and should therefore be used!

Over time, you will get a feel for which hashtags are large (from 500,000 images) and which hashtags are rather smaller.

The smaller the hashtag, the smaller the competition and the greater your chance of showing up at the top.

Instagram tip # 5: never neglect the caption!

With texts you can achieve a lot more than you think! Because my experience shows: Instagram users read the image descriptions very well and like to interact with the content.

Very important: The Instagram algorithm measures the number of comments and likes. This means that an image with a high interaction rate tends to be displayed and featured more often at the top of the feed. That's why it's super important to choose a caption that inspires the user and encourages interaction.

In the beginning I made exactly this mistake and didn't write any good texts:

What do you notice about my text above?

  • It's in English, although I actually wanted to address a German-speaking target group
  • The text is way too short and totally irrelevant ... it hardly stimulates interaction.

Here is a current example from me:

You can see what I mean: I tell the users a story that is interesting to read. I also like to start with a question or close the text with a question so that users can answer me in the comments and I generate more interactions.

Instagram tip # 6: post at the right time

Think carefully about when your target audience is online. Are you a mom blogger and mainly address other mothers? Then it's better to post in the morning between 9-10 a.m. when the children are in daycare or in the evening when the kids are already in bed. Are you addressing a very young target group? Then only post in the evening or in the afternoon (e.g. directly after school).

Find the perfect posting time in your business statistics

If you have an Instagram business account (you can switch a private account to a business account under "Settings" with one click), then you have access to valuable statistics! These show you when your subscribers are most frequently active. From this you can in turn deduce the best time to post. For me it is e.g. between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Instagram tip # 7: use a call-to-action in those posts!

A call-to-action (CTA) means that you call on your followers to take a concrete action: This could be, for example. writing a comment, clicking on your blog or participating in a giveaway. I now use a CTA in almost every post.
In the picture below I have marked an example:

Instagram Tip # 8: Posting regularly is a must!

Especially at the beginning it is difficult to stay on the ball continuously. After an initial euphoria, many lose motivation or find it exhausting to keep producing new content.

But this is exactly where you can't give up! Because if you really have the goal of getting more Instagram followers, then you have to offer them something new on a regular basis.

There's no point posting a picture once and then not being heard from you for three weeks. This behavior is also rated badly by the Instagram algorithm, which in turn has a negative effect on your reach.

That doesn't mean you have to post 5 pictures or videos a day, but it does 1 picture a day or a picture every 2 days are a good cut. From my own experience, I can say that the first 10,000 subscribers are the most difficult. But then it goes steadily uphill.

And that's why you should always motivate yourself to stay on the ball and not lose sight of your long-term goal. Because I can promise you one thing: once you get the hang of it, it will be a lot easier for you! 🙂

Instagram Tip # 9: Use Instagram Stories regularly!

In addition to simple feed contributions, the Insta Stories have also become firmly established and are now part of the standard repertoire of successful channels. This allows you to show your Instagram followers more of your everyday life and take them with you behind the scenes. This additional content is produced quickly (mobile phone out and let's go!) And gives your followers an authentic insight into your everyday life.

An advantage of the stories: They are viewed particularly often by your followers - sometimes even more often than your feed posts. So don't miss this chance for more visibility!
