Which processor is best for budget laptops?

Starting at 500 euros: an overview of good and inexpensive laptops for the home office

Table of Contents

Despite all the possibilities of networked work, a classic desktop computer is too inflexible for many. Smartphones and tablets are at least not up to the task yet. A laptop is quickly the first choice, but there is a large selection of laptops for the home office. We'll show you how much money you should spend and where you can save.

Entry-level laptops are unsuitable for the home office

In the case of laptops that act as workhorses, it does not always have to be the fastest processor, but too low a performance level is a hindrance in everyday work. Even if only Office and a browser are operated, simple Celeron or Pentium processors are already very busy, especially if the RAM is only 4 GB in size. For the processor, we recommend using at least a relatively current Core i3 from Intel or AMD's Ryzen 3 and at least 8 GB of RAM. For resource-hungry applications such as graphics programs, 16 GB may also be available. The data storage should not be chosen below 256 GB, more is better.

Some notebooks also offer the option of expanding memory and RAM bars afterwards. This is practical, but it also usually means a larger and chunkier case. This depends on your priorities.

If you have a laptop for working from home for less than 500 euros, you should take a closer look, if it is not an attractive remaining item. Because with attractive offers in this price range you should also make sure that the notebook is offered with a Windows license. So it can be that with some bargains an operating system is foregone. In this case, you would have to buy and install Windows yourself, which involves additional work.

Asus Vivobook Flip

The Vivobook Flip is equipped with a somewhat weaker processor and only 256 gigabytes of memory, but it does another trick: As the name suggests, the display can be rotated 360 degrees and offers touch support. Huawei MateBook D14 / D15

The only difference between the two models is the display size: Here you can choose between the compact 14-inch and the classic 15.6-inch standard format. The more compact model weighs 1.38 kilos and the larger model 1.58 kilos. The connections are identical in both models: two classic USB, one USB-C, HDMI and a headphone / headset connection.

The highlight of the two notebooks is a very good keyboard with an integrated fingerprint sensor for secure unlocking. In addition, the notebooks are charged via USB-C. Only the webcam built into the keyboard ensures strange camera angles in video meetings.
