Will the government close on Friday

Speculation about a new lockdown

The conference is said to take place at 3 p.m., after which a press statement is planned. Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) left it open on Thursday whether there would be further measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic. He did not want to anticipate the conversation with the state governors, said Anschober on the sidelines of a press conference.

In any case, there is intensive medium-term planning in the federal government. Tomorrow will be discussed and then communicated, said the Minister of Health. He had been asked whether the schools could be closed again before the actual Christmas break. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) also left it open on Wednesday whether there could be new measures in view of the persistently high number of infections.

Numbers remain high

The background to the considerations is the still high number of infections, the situation in the hospitals and the concern that the situation could worsen further in view of the Christmas holidays. There are exceptions for the holidays: for Christmas on December 24th and 25th, a maximum of ten people from several households may come together.

What do the CoV measures mean for the holidays?

According to AGES, the 7-day incidence is currently 209. Although the number of infections has been reduced in the past few weeks, Austria is still a long way from the targeted 1,000 new infections per day. Anschober also said that there have been over 100 deaths for days and weeks, and that is "far too many": "I'm not ready to accept that." On Wednesday, the Ministry of the Interior and Health Ministry reported 218 newly registered deaths, causing excitement taken care of. Most of these were late registrations from Vienna, which were already included in the AGES figures.

"Fragile situation"

In the past few days, experts had also warned them to be careful: complexity researcher Peter Klimek, for example, continued to locate a “very fragile and risky situation”. In order not to let a third wave surge up soon after the Christmas holidays, “we actually need a drastic reduction”. Like other countries, Austria should also take the opportunity to slow down the spread over Christmas, said Klimek to the APA.

In a weekly comparison there are fewer and fewer new reports, but this trend has slowed down. Klimek warned that what was happening in Germany was what had recently been observed in Germany for many weeks, namely a kind of simmering of the situation at a very high level. Given the Christmas holidays, there is hardly any relaxation around the corner, not even in the intensive care units.

SPÖ calls for "Christmas rest"

Most recently, SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner had spoken out in favor of a “Christmas rest” for the trade, while Burgenland regional chief Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) demanded a complete lockdown for Austria: “No more salami tactics. We have to close everything now - shops, schools, restaurants, ski lifts ”, Doskozil said in the daily newspaper“ Heute ”- more on this in burgenland.ORF.at.
