The ICAR is compulsory for studying agriculture

25 years of work in the ZAR - obituary DI Franz Steger

DI Franz Steger worked for ZAR for 25 years until his retirement.

On April 26, 2020 we received the sad news that our former colleague DI Franz Steger died at the age of 80. Franz Steger was born on March 31, 1940 in a farming family in Stierberg in the upper Mühlviertel. After compulsory school he attended the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein in 1960 in order to study agriculture at the BOKU. His professional career began in the then newly founded Agricultural and Forestry Computing Center (LFRZ) in Vienna as an IT specialist with a focus on organizing and coordinating the data from the milk yield test. In 1975 he switched to the newly founded IT group at ZAR. His area of responsibility was, among other things, a uniform implementation of the milk performance test in the state control associations as well as the adaptation of the breeding value estimation to the modern requirements. At that time, Franz Steger was also the chairman of the ZAR working group of the state control associations. For many years he represented the interests of ZAR in the International Committee for Performance Assessments (ICAR), where he was able to make a very strong contribution with his profound specialist knowledge. His work colleagues valued him as a very correct, helpful and amiable colleague. Until recently he was in regular contact with colleagues from ZAR and ZuchtData. Franz Steger will be fondly remembered even beyond the work colleagues!
